Tales of the Fourth Age
Vanir are a race of humanoids that like in Vanaheim. They are mostly Human in appearance, though they are actually descendants of Giants. This is evident in their physical build: they typically reach heights of 7-8 feet tall, with the tallest pushing 9 feet. Vanir society consists of a loose alliance of tribes, uniting only in the face of common enemies before dissolving to a state of near-constant warring and raiding.
The most well-known facet of Vanir society is their mercenaries. Known and feared across the World, Vanir mercenaries will only take jobs that they deem worthy. What passes for “worthy” depends on the individual mercenary, but usually involves such considerations as the honor that would be gained in the mission and it’s difficulty. The more challenging a mission, the more likely it is that a Vanir mercenary will accept the contract (up to a certain point; they aren’t suicidal). It is also rumored that if someone can defeat a Vanir mercenary in a one-on-one wrestling match, he will earn the Vanir’s loyalty, though it is also said that no one has yet succeeded.
